Sometimes, you just have to pull up a metronome app on your phone, plug in, and play! Start with a groove, add some fill ideas, open it up, move onto another groove idea, and repeat. The goal is to flow... Shift your attitude and approach to the click not as a tempo crutch, but more as another rhythmic "voice" to play off of... that way, you're grooving with the click and everything is not only in play with the tempo, but part of an interplay with it. Dig?

Performing with Herbie in Russia for International Jazz Day's Global All-Star Concert... Total bucket list, as Herbie's "Thrust" album is one of my all-time favorites and the tune we played was "Actual Proof"! Also, being in a rhythm section consisting of Herbie, James Genus on bass, and Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez on drums was pretty epic!
